Course Description

This course will provide a broad overview of microeconomics. Microeconomics is the study of issues specific to households, firms, or industries with an emphasis on the role of markets. Topics discussed will include household and firm behavior, demand and supply,government intervention, market structures, and the efficient allocation of resources.

Learning Outcomes

G01: Explain the concept of opportunity cost.

  • SLO-01: The student will demonstrate the concept of opportunity cost and its role in economic decision-making.

G02: Demonstrate knowledge of the laws of supply and demand and equilibrium.

  • SLO-02: The student will demonstrate knowledge of the laws of supply and demand in the context of market equilibrium.

G03: Use supply and demand curves to analyze responses of markets to external events.

  • SLO-03: The student will use supply and demand curves to analyze how external events affect market equilibrium.

G04: Use supply and demand analysis to examine the impact of government intervention.

  • SLO-04: The student will apply supply and demand analysis to evaluate the effects of government intervention in markets.

G05: Explain and calculate price elasticity of demand and other elasticities.

  • SLO-05: The student will calculate and interpret price elasticity of demand.

G06: Demonstrate an understanding of producer choice, including cost and break-even analysis.

  • SLO-06: The student will explain producer decision-making and analyze cost structures and break-even points.

G07: Compare and contrast the following market structures: perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly.

G08: Understand the importance of income distribution and measurement of inequality.

  • SLO-08: The student will explain income distribution concepts and evaluate measures of economic inequality.

G09: Apply knowledge of supply and demand analysis to factor markets.

G10: Explain the economics of information and market failure.

Attendance

Regular attendance is strongly encouraged. Attendance and class participation comprise 10%% of your grade.

Late Work

Late work will be penalized as follows: - 1-2 days late: -10%% - 3-5 days late: -25%% - 6+ days late: -50%%
